13 What Steps to Take Now Determine if you are eligible for MCSD to pay for your concurrent enrollment credit You will be in 11th or 12th grade during the 2016/2017 school year Younger students may enroll with the college for credit, but the district will not pay for the tuition. You have at least a 3.0 cumulative G.P.A. You are college ready as determined by each school This may require additional testing- i.e. Accuplacer The course is part of your I.C.A.P.-Individual Career and Academic Plan Remember-the ICAP is a flexible document that can be revised at any time. At this time the additional testing, accuplacer or ACT scores are NOT required for you to fill out the paperwork

14 How to complete the required paperwork:
What Steps to Take Now How to complete the required paperwork: Attend the mandatory Concurrent Enrollment meeting-You are here now. Pick up the Intent to Enroll and Promise to Repay paperwork today. Return the paperwork to the Counseling Center with appropriate signatures (yours and your parent’s) before March 15, 2016. This paperwork will save your spot/tuition money with the district, it does NOT mean that you have enrolled in the course for the 2016/2017 school year. Please come and see me with any questions that you have on the Intent to Enroll and Promise to Repay.

15 Where can I get more information?
Counseling Center, see Ms. Meek Fill out the sign in sheet completely so that the Counseling Center can contact you. Teacher of the Concurrent Enrollment class you are considering Specific questions about registering for the course in 2015/2016 Questions about course specifics Counseling Center web page The Colorado Department of Education (Secondary Initiatives-Concurrent Enrollment)

16 Intent to Enroll and Promise to Repay
What is due now? Intent to Enroll and Promise to Repay Pick up now. DUE: March 15, 2016 to the Counseling Center Turn these forms in EARLY! They will not be accepted after March 15, 2016. I know historically that forms have been accepted late, however we are changing this culture, this is an absolute deadline, if you are sick for 2 days before this deadline and miss it, unfortunately you will not be eligible for concurrent enrollment next year. Mr. Steele is here to talk about the Concurrent Enrollment English class, what a good candidate looks like, etc.

17 Questions?

18 Steps to take in 2016/2017 Pay attention to information that your teachers are giving you regarding enrollment procedures for your concurrent enrollment course. Follow deadlines for enrollment: if you miss them you will NOT be eligible to earn the college credit. Ask for help! Come see Ms. Meek or Ms. Brundage in the Counseling Center or ask your teacher if you have questions. Determine if taking the class for college credit is the right choice for you-just because you fill out the Intent to Enroll and Promise to Repay does not mean you must take the class for college credit. Things to do next year! I will be keeping the sign in sheets and creating an extensive data base with your contact information to help you navigate signing up for classes and determining if you want to take the class for college credit. Ultimately it is YOUR job to make sure that you sign up with the college.

19 Determining if concurrent enrollment is a good fit for you
Not-So-Good Fit: Good attendance Self-starters who ask for help when needed Good at meeting deadlines and keeping up with work on their own Proficient TCAP scores Students who miss class often Students who tend to miss deadlines and get behind Students who have limited time to work on assignments, complete labs, and study for exams Students with weak background in that subject

20 Help to Determine If Concurrent Enrollment Is The Best Choice
Advanced Placement Concurrent Enrollment Credit depends on performance on the AP exam Must send scores to colleges and universities for credit consideration Tends to be used by more competitive schools Guaranteed transfer credits in the state of Colorado (Possibly as elective credit) Possible transfer credit to out of state schools Based on successful completion of the course (grade of C or better) Creates a record of college level performance YOU must request a copy of your transcript from the appropriate school

21 Factors to Consider Advanced Placement (AP) is a lower risk financially (smaller amount lost if not successful), higher risk academically (it all comes down to one exam) Concurrent Enrollment credit is a higher risk financially (if you do not pass) and a lower risk academically (your credit doesn’t depend on a single exam) Both options are challenging Neither option is required It is worthwhile to research the pros and cons of both choices in regards to the specific colleges and universities you are considering for your postsecondary career.

22 Accelerating Students through Concurrent Enrollment
ASCENT Accelerating Students through Concurrent Enrollment A 5th year program for students who have completed or are on schedule to complete at least 12 credit hours of college coursework prior to completion of his/her 12th grade year. Student postpones high school graduation for a year. Student attends a postsecondary institution, usually a community college. Tuition is paid by the school district. (with some restrictions) Students will not receive a high school diploma until the ASCENT program is completed. While a potential benefit for all students, this option is particularly useful for undocumented students. If interested, please see Ms. Meek
