Think of the dystopian movies and books you know. What are some things they have in common?

3. Reluctant, rebellious protagonist
The main character realizes he/she needs to fight against the society. The process of realization is often difficult and slow.

4. Social isolation
The community the protagonist knows is separated off from either the rest of the society or the rest of the world.

5. Strict government rules
Parts of life for the citizens of the society are controlled by the government.  

6. Social hierarchy
There is a difference between how types of people within the society are treated, especially with regards to power and resources.

7. Access to knowledge
Citizens of the society are kept “in the dark” about the truth. Curiosity is often discouraged.
