What 5 items would you take with you to a desert island?
Would you share the items with others? Or keep them to yourself?
2
Desert Island Survival
Each of your tables is now an island. An independent community who must survive and live together until a rescue party comes Would it be important for everyone to get on? What would be some of the problems you might meet? What rules might you need to make? What might it be like with no rules? You need to have a meeting to discuss the rules of the island with those living there. It has been suggested that you elect an Island leader and that you devise a code of conduct for the island.

Who will build the shelter? Who will cook and keep everything tidy?
You only have enough food to last you 6 weeks. Have you got rules in place to deal with food rations? Who will build the shelter? Who will cook and keep everything tidy? You need to map out your island and prepare a rota for each person to look after a particular area.

One member of the group refuses to help out on the island
One member of the group refuses to help out on the island. What are you going to do about it?

Desert Island Times Food thief trouble hits the islands
Keeping the islands up to date - Since 2011 Food thief trouble hits the islands Food has been reported as going missing in Islands across the region. There is not enough to last and if the culprit is not found the whole community will starve. Calls are being made for an island council to investigate and solve the problem. What will happen?
6
Go at night and steal some of their food
You have built a raft which allows one member of the group to visit another island. Do you: Go at night and steal some of their food Go to discuss the best ways to survive on an island. Go to have a party in the evening Ruin the other islands’ shelter Choose as a group what you will do and write it on a piece of paper.
7
Island Hopping? Everyone on the islands are getting a bit bored of being with the same people all the time and so have decided that there will be a swap. Each person who comes to your island will bring food with them. If you choose not to move you will remain on your island and keep your amount of food. The Island with the greatest number of people will be rewarded. However each island cannot hold more than 10 people. How will you decide who gets to move if it is over subscribed? Will you move from your island or will you remain loyal?

A message has arrived in a bottle!
Dear Islanders, We have received your SOS call and will be sending out rescue vehicles tomorrow. We have space to rescue 15 people from the six islands. You must choose who needs to be rescued first and prepare them for departure. How will you decide who gets rescued? Can you decide as a class what rules you will use to decide?
9
Good and evil on the island
How would your rules have helped you on the Island? Would it be necessary to have rules? Why? Do the needs of the individual outweigh the needs of the group? Does putting yourself first make you a bad person? William Glasser once said “We are driven by five genetic needs: survival, love and belonging, power, freedom, and fun.” Which of these do you think would be the priority on the desert island? What is the point in being good?
