1 National 4 - Added Value Unit
Information Literacy National 4 - Added Value Unit

2 What have you to do? Choose a topic independently.
Find two different texts on that topic to research. One of your texts must be written e.g.: newspaper, book, leaflet or website. The other source could be a documentary, song etc.

3 Assessment 1. Using your own words, explain what each source is telling you about the topic and what you have learned. RESEARCH. 2. Compare the sources, both positively and negatively. COMPARISON. Both parts (Research and Comparison)are equally important and will form the basis of your essay = words.

4 This is the talking and listening element of your Added Value Unit.
Follow Up Once you have completed your written work you must respond to oral questions in order to pass. This is the talking and listening element of your Added Value Unit.

5 How will you do it? Information Literacy
Always choose your texts carefully. Question your texts: are they reliable, how did you find them, are they relevant to your topic? If you found your text online did you use a reliable website/database, did you use Google’s Advance Search? If your text is a book, how recently was it published, is it out of date? Compare your texts: how helpful/reliable are they, look at the layout and language, what have you learned from them about your topic?

6 How do you do it? Information Literacy Cont.
As you use your texts take notes. Skim and scan the words. Summarise the points. Write them down – perhaps in bullet points. Collect as much information as you can as fast as you can. When taking notes use your own words. Do not copy and paste. If you do it is a form of cheating = PLAGIARISM. As you work take down the title, author or website address of your texts. This will help you to create your bibliography at the end of your Added Value Unit.

7 Bibliography Get into the habit of including a bibliography with your Added Value Unit. A bibliography is a list of the name of the texts you have used and is normally the last page of your piece of written work. This will help your teacher and SQA marker to grade/mark your work.
