Before we start today, I have to share with you my positionality to this work. I do this work, in part because it is lived experience including the foster youth part. I have done a lot in my 10 year career, but the thing I have learned the most about this work is, is just being consistent. JOHN BURTON ADVOCATES FOR YOUTH

It is also important to note that there are countless programs, who go by various names with different funding streams. This means programs may not look the same campus to campus or even year to year. I have outlined what you will (generally) see across many of the programs. JOHN BURTON ADVOCTAES FOR YOUTH

To name a few... GUARDIAN SCHOLARS CARE The programs I've listed here are the most relevant for transitional aged foster youth. The first 3 Guardian Scholars Program, NextUp and YESS ILP are specifically designed for foster youth. NextUp is located at 45 California community colleges and for youth who were in care on or after their 16th birthday and registered in at least 9 units. Programs such as CalWORKs and CARE are also programs for students who are parenting and receiving public benefits. Learning communities can range from cultural interests to academic communities, but they are centered around promoting interest and learning around certain topics (Give CIPHER example). Encouraging youth to join multiple things is encouraged. When exploring colleges, majors and careers, also do a deeper dive into the programs that they can participate in.
