Presentation on theme: "Shapes and Patterns In Nature"— Presentation transcript:

Shapes and Patterns In Nature
Ask students what they think a pattern is and ask them to describe what they mean. Ask students if they can give any examples of patterns they see in their lives.

Shapes Ask students what they see in the image. Have them describe all the shapes they can see. Examples include stripes on the tiger, lines (the tiger’s whiskers, the trees in the background), etc.

Shapes Ask students what they see in the image. Have them describe all the shapes they can see. Examples include circles in the clouds.

Shapes Ask students what they see in the image. Have them describe all the shapes they can see. Examples include an oval shape of the entire palm frond, ripples in the water, etc.

Shapes Ask students what they see in the image. Have them describe all the shapes they can see. Examples include the round sun, the oval of the tree, and shapes in the clouds..

Shapes that repeat? Ask students if they noticed if any of the shapes repeated themselves (e.g., the tiger stripes, leaves on the palm fronds).

Pattern A shape that repeats in different organisms, settings, or situations. When we see shapes repeat, we call them patterns. Patterns are important to scientists because they help them understand the world better.

Patterns Ask students what they see in the images. Have them compare and see if they see repeated patterns. Here we see ripples in water and sand. Ask students what they think causes the ripples in each image. They might be able to notice that wind causes both.

Patterns Ask students what they see in the images. They might notice that each image has a fan pattern.

Patterns Ask students what they see in the images. Here they might notice that there are spirals.

Patterns Ask students what they see in the images. They may notice branching patterns. Ask students why these patterns form. They may observe that both are caused by the flow of water.
