2 MACOSH MARINE ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH.
COMPOSED OF TWO GROUPS, LONGSHORING AND SHIPYARDS. MEMBERSHIP INCLUDES GOVERNMENT, PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATION, WORKER AND EMPLOYER INTERESTS. THE PURPOSE OF MACOSH IS TO ADVISE OSHA ON HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUES IN THE MARITIME INDUSTRY.

4 IT STARTS WITH A LAB REPORT

5 LAB REPORT HOW DOES THE DATA IN A LAB REPORT HELP WITH MITIGATING HEALTH AND SAFETY RISKS? WHAT DOES THE LAB REPORT ACTUALLY TELL YOU? WHAT CAN MACOSH DO TO AID SMALLER SHIPYARDS WITH UNDERSTANDING THE PROCESS TO PROTECT WORKERS? WHERE DO YOU START?

6 Coating Flammability and Toxicity
One hazard which must be considered is the flammability or ability to burn of the coatings. A significant hazard encountered during repair operations is Combustion By-Products of coatings. Unless the fuel and oxidant are both simple molecules (e.g. hydrogen and oxygen leading to water), the products of combustion can be as complex and varied as the combustion processes, forming as many compounds as originally present, if not more.

7 Mitigating Combustion By-Product Hazards
The most common method of mitigating combustion by-products is through the use of ventilation. How can we be sure this is effectively removing the hazards to a safe level? Monitor during repair operations

8 Mitigating Combustion By-Product Hazards
The most effective means of mitigation is to remove the coating prior to commencing hot work operations OSHA 29CFR (d) refers to removing toxic coatings from the surface work areas a minimum of 4” from the area of heat application.
