About Eurostat Created in 1952 as a service of the High Authority for Coal and Steel - 7 staff Based in Luxembourg Director General Mr Walter Radermacher Today over 800 staff with increasing responsibilities

Eurostat objectives Provide statistical information on the EU to the European instutions, journalists, businesses, decision makers, researchers, students, citizens, etc. Cooperate with NSIs to develop the ESS Cooperate with third countries and with international organisations (ECB, IMF, OECD, World Bank, UN, etc.)

Responsibilities of Eurostat
Collect data from NSIs Define harmonised methods, definitions and classifications Compile European aggregates – EU and Euro area Disseminate statistics Coordinate the partnership with the NSIs within the European Statistical System (ESS) Coordinate statistical activities within the European Commission

Annual Work Programmes (AWP)
AWP implements the ESP Provides detailed information on the planned statistical activities of a given year A European Statistical System programme (Eurostat + NSIs) Takes into account needs of the users (Commission DGs, ESAC, ECB) and political priorities as well as possibilities of the producers Basis for establishment of national statistical programmes

Legal framework Article 338 of the Lisbon Treaty provides Community statistics with a constitutional basis ... the European Parliament and the Council shall adopt (by ordinary legislative procedure) measures for the production of statistics where necessary for the performance of the activities of the Union The production of Union statistics shall conform to impartiality, reliability, objectivity, scientific independence, cost-effectiveness and statistical confidentiality; it shall not entail excessive burdens on economic operators Regulation ((EC) no 223/2009) on European statistics, the so called "Statistical Law"
