Strategic Business Planning Model NASA Space Program Current State and Forces of Change The National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 was enacted on July 29, The act specifically charged NASA with eight objectives, including “the establishment of long-range studies of the potential benefits to be gained from, the opportunities for, and the problems involved in the utilization of aeronautical and space activities for peaceful and scientific purposes.” The Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1 into a low Earth orbit on October 4, 1957.
