We are taking a cross –curricular approach to our learning this Term as we delve into the tragic account of the maiden voyage of HMS Titanic.

Autumn English - Reading
The Titanic Detective Agency – Lindsay Littleson; Titanic Survivor – Stephen Davies Creative writing Poetic Language – use of personification, similes and metaphors in poetry about the sea and how the structure and poetic language contributes to the imagery and meaning of the poem. Diaries / Eye Witness Reports; Journalistic Writing; Character Descriptions and Recounts

Mathematics - Place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division – with a focus on decimals, fractions and decimals; shape The speed and accuracy of multiplication tables, is an essential skill for all Year 6s and children should be encouraged to go over these facts regularly. Religious Education ‘Loving’- we will begin to know and understand: the love and care of people; God’s love is unconditional and never ending Vocation and Commitment Judaism Expectations

Topic Titanic – The ‘Unsinkable’ Ship As well as looking at the disaster itself, this cross- curricular topic will look at - Music from the early 20th Century; Children’s Street Songs of early 20th Century; Weather/Temperature; Maps – distance and scale; Latitude and longitude; Diversity of Passengers (geographically and social status); Titanic Paintings and Pablo Picasso.

Homework The homework tasks that the children will be expected to complete are as follows: Read (daily) Practise spellings (daily) Comprehension and/or Grammar exercise (alternate weeks) Times table practise (daily) Mathematics – linked to class work (weekly) Science / RE activity (if required) Long term topic homework (one a term) Homework will be set on a Thursday and is expected to be handed in on the following Wednesday. Spelling test will be on a Wednesday. Homework will support work undertaken in class and as such, your child should be able to complete a task independently.

Reading Reading is an important skill and we value it highly.
It is expected that the children read every night and that they choose their own books, which should be at an appropriate level. You can help support your child’s reading development by listening to them read, reading to them yourself and sharing a variety of books at home. We value your support and encourage you to contribute to your child’s reading diary regularly.

Physical Education PE lessons will take place on a Thursday afternoon – ‘Love Ballet’ on a Friday afternoon. Kit – Black shorts/leggings, school PE shirt, trainers/plimsoles, school hoodie and tracksuit bottoms (colder weather). Earrings must be removed or covered by tape.

Assessment Assessment takes place continuously throughout the school year. It informs the work teachers plan for your children and enables them to reach their full potential through carefully structured activities.

Key Stage Two: Year Six SATs
In Year 6, there is an additional assessment, known as SATs, which are a national testing system. SATs evaluate your child’s educational progress and allow teachers to make comparisons between children against their age related expectations. The test takes place in May.

Key Stage Two- KS2 Year 6 SATs Test Dates 2019
The dates that the National KS2 SATs will take place in May 2019 are from Monday 13th May 2019 to Thursday 16th May 2019. Monday 11th May : Grammar/Punctuation - 45 minutes Monday 11th May : Spelling - 20 minutes Tuesday 12th May : Reading Test - 60 minutes Wednesday 13th May : Maths Paper 1 (Arithmetic) - 30 minutes Wednesday 13th May : Maths Paper 2 (Reasoning) - 40 minutes Thursday 14th May : Maths Paper 3 (Reasoning) - 40 minutes All tests are externally marked. As in recent years, writing will be teacher assessed internally.

How To Help Your Child First and foremost, support and reassure your child that there is nothing to worry about and they should always just try their best. Praise and encourage! Ensure your child has the best possible attendance at school. Support your child with any homework tasks. Reading, spelling and arithmetic (e.g. times tables) are always good to practise. Talk to your child about what they have learnt at school and what book(s) they are reading (the character, the plot, their opinion). Targets in the back of the home school planner.

In an attempt to save paper and be more environmentally friendly, I have not printed anything out for this Welcome meeting. Instead all the information contained in the slides and our Termly Overview can be found on the Vine Class web page. Our Eco/Science council will be gifted some of the savings made and will, in consultation with the other children buy something ‘useful’ with the money.
