Cause - a thing that happens in such a way that some specific thing happens as a result; the reason something happens Effect – something that is produced by a cause; a result or consequence Serfs – in Medieval Europe, peasants who were bound to the lord’s land Merchants - a person who buys and sells goods; a trader; a storekeeper Neutral – not supporting either side in a war, dispute or contest

Impact of the Crusades Positive Negative Neutral
1 - Increased trade between Europe & the Middle East/Asia. New goods such as spices (sugar), fabrics (cotton) & perfumes are introduced to Europeans. 2 – Expanded the contacts between Europe & the “outside” world. Helped to cause an increase in exploration of foreign lands. 1 – Increased religious hatred & mistrust between Muslims & Christians as well as Christians & Jews. 2 – Kings’ power began to increase because many nobles died during the Crusades. King’s gained more rights to impose taxes on the people. 1 – The power & importance of the Pope was increased temporarily. This helped increase the presence of the Catholic Church.
