1 The European Commission’s science
and knowledge service Joint Research Centre 1500 core research staff, 3000 total staff 83% Of core research staff with PhD’s Over 1,400 scientific publications per year

2 Fuels from the Sun: Artificial Photosynthesis
EIC Horizon Prize for Fuels from the Sun: Artificial Photosynthesis Grand Final Demonstration Event, summer 2021 Location (Ispra, Italy) Procedures Safety & Security Open points/discussion

3 JRC Ispra

4 Proposed area for grand final
ESTI about 2000 persons (JRC and external) 167 hectares N

5 Ispra average daily insolation per month.
Notes Ispra has an annual insolation of 1710 kW/m2/year (for a south-facing plane at 35o). The JRC's European Solar Test Installation (ESTI) lab continuously monitors the solar radiation (beam and diffuse), spectrum, ambient temperature, humidity and wind speed). In high summer short thunder storms may occur. Proposed area for grand final ESTI N

6 Outline Procedure Participants transport their device to JRC Ispra at a time to be specified (at their own cost and responsibility) Set-up on an outdoor pad (max. space for device 5 m x 5 m x 3 m; 48 hours allowed; CO2, mains electricity and water upplied (and monitored) to all test pads) Inspection by expert jurors to verify device design, materials use and inputs; Simultaneous unassisted operation of all devices for a continuous period of 72 hours using natural sunlight.; Evaluation of the fuel produced (composition analysis and powering a Stirling engine). Results to contribute to the overall AP Prize Evaluation

7 Safety & Security JRC Ispra site has restricted access and visitors need to request an entry permit in advance Participating teams to send in advance safety related details of their device and a statement of safety conformity (gas handling, electrics etc) The JRC site safety office will perform a check on each device prior to the commencement of the verification test (72 test).

8 Open Points Interest for a site inspection / workshop event at Ispra in 2020? For safety/risk assessment, what type and amount of gas is likely to be produced in 72 hours? Current upper bound estimate is 2.5 m3 STP. Collection method for gas produced and transfer procedure to Stirling engine test Others ….. 
