Makes you smarter Longer attention spans More job opportunities More aware of the world Better SAT verbal Better critical thinker For parents: briefly list the benefits… To do with students: Create a list on the board with the reasons students are learning language? You can create a banner with butcher paper with “WHY ARE YOU LEARNING A NEW LANGUAGE?” Down the middle. Allow students to write their reasons on the banner. DISCUSS THE REASONS WITH THE GROUP… You can always Hang the banner in the room or in the hall outside your room to help build student ownership of learning. LEARNING ANOTHER LANGUAGE? 8 Performance and Proficiency are measured on the ACTFL (The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Proficiency) Scale and our AZ World & Native Language Standards The rubrics for each level are on my website: Interpersonal Writing/Speaking Presentational Writing/Speaking

11 FAIL FORWARD! We do not get better if we do not try! This means we will make mistakes. What is important is not that we made a mistake but that we learn from it. If we did everything perfectly we wouldn’t ever learn! This is your opportunity to master failing forward!

12 Grading semester work 80%, Final 20%
Homework and most class work is to develop the skills necessary to perform in the language. This is a minor portion of the grade (1-4 points each) Grammatical and vocabulary test are another part which helps the student progress (10 points each) Unit tests points are points. Performance toward proficiency assessments – interpersonal, interpretive, presentational (speaking- reading-listening-writing points each)

I CANS (oral / written assessments) Retake tests (get the 2nd grade no matter what) Office hours – lunch, 2:15-3:00 NO LATE WORK accepted unless original in nature BE ACTIVELY ENGAGED DAILY Practice, practice, practice, practice….
