Please have your agenda placed on the corner of your desk Why do you think the Japanese call their islands the “Land of the Rising Sun?” Answer: because it seems the sun rises from Japan, and then spreads across the rest of Asia Today’s Learning Target: Explain the role of the United States in the rebuilding of Japan after WWII.

The US & Britain wanted to spread democracy and a free market economy in Europe; but the USSR wanted to spread communism and a command economy in Europe. Today’s Learning Target: Explain the reasons for foreign involvement in Korea regarding the containment of communism.

Answer: to stop the spread of communist dictatorships (to contain communism) Today’s Learning Target: Explain the reasons for foreign involvement in Vietnam regarding the containment of communism. How did the Cold War play out in Korea? The USSR (wanted to spread their ideology of communism to other countries) fought on the North Korean side and the US (wanted to spread their ideology of democratic republics to other countries) fought on the South Korea side Explain the US’s policy of containment during the Cold War? To stop the spread of communism in governments throughout the world, especially in countries whose economies and governments were unstable - still true today, but also includes unstable countries were terrorist leader can absorb power (to contain communism)
