Prof. Wilfred McSherry PhD, RGN, FRCN EPICC Lead Strategic Partner Mr. Adam Boughey MSc, MBPsS, RN EPICC Project Manager Teaching and Learning Event 2 (Malta) 24th August 2018
2
Objectives for use of the Standard
Gain support from the Dean and Heads of Department to implement the EPICC Standard. Ensure the EPICC Standard and Gold Standard Matrix is embedded across pre-registration nursing and midwifery education programmes. Raise awareness of the EPICC Project with colleagues at Staffordshire University and wider health and social care partners.
3
Activities Meeting with the Dean of the School of Health and Social Care and three heads of Department (Nursing; Midwifery and Allied Health; Social Work and Social Welfare). Set-up review and implementation group. Mapping the Standard against existing curricula. Searching existing curricula for reference to ‘spirituality’ and ‘spiritual care’. Review of new NMC Standards Framework.
4
Who was involved? Wilf and Adam have been coordinating this work and maintaining contact with nursing and midwifery colleagues. Efforts and challenges to building a group to guide the review and implementation of the Standard. Further meeting: 5th October. So far 6 colleagues have confirmed attendance. Developing broader interest of spirituality and spiritual care in nursing and midwifery.
5
Parts of the Standard used?
Curricula uncertainty due to new Nursing and Midwifery (NMC) Standards Framework published earlier this year. Nursing and midwifery colleagues wanted to wait until new Standards Framework published before reviewing and exploring the implementation of EPICC draft Standard. Uncertainty has been a key obstacle to conducting an in-depth review and implementation.
6
Conclusions Still a ‘work in progress’.
Inspired and gained the support of colleagues to review and implement the EPICC draft Standard further, as the new NMC Standards Framework is implemented to revise curricula. Adam recently been appointed as a full-time Lecturer in Adult Nursing (Staffordshire University), and continued Project Management, so will be working more closely with colleagues to develop this work further.
