Objective: The students will be able to evaluate to what extent Americans resisted initiatives for democracy and inclusion by analyzing the responses of American citizens toward minority populations in the United States AP Essential Questions What were the causes of Americans’ resistance to initiatives for democracy and inclusion in the period ? How did this resistance represent a change or continuity from previous behavior?

4 Warm-up “I have seen the Indian in his forests and the Negro in his chains, and thought, as I contemplated their pitiable condition, that I saw the very extreme of human wretchedness; but I did not then know the condition of unfortunate Ireland” an early 19th century French traveler 1. What is this traveler observing in the U.S. and Ireland? 2. Explain the message the traveler is sending with this statement?

7 Mini-Lesson Students will analyze data to make predictions about who is coming to the United States and how those impacts are affecting the U.S. 1. Identify trends in both data sets. 2. What message is this data sending? How do you know that?

8 Guided Practice We will analyze a primary source as a group to model the expectations for the groups as they will read and analyze their own source.

9 Cooperative Activity In your student groups, you will be assigned one primary source to analyze and report out to the class by identifying the message of the author. As you listen to the other groups report out, prepare to ask 1 question of the group that is reporting out. This may be a clarifying question or a follow-up question.

10 Independent Practice To what extent did Americans resist initiatives for democracy and inclusion? Be sure to include knowledge gained from yesterday.

11 Conclusion Compare and contrast the treatment of foreigners and immigrants in the first half of the 19th century to immigrants in the early 21st century.

12 Homework Writing Assignment: To what extent did Americans resist initiatives for democracy and inclusion? Be sure to include knowledge gained from yesterday. OR Create a pamphlet set in the 1840s for immigrants on how to address the problems of the United States. Be sure to include the responses of the Americans to the changes. Or create a pamphlet that addresses the immigration problem and be sure to include a response that addresses the changing demographics of the United States.
