7 Particular Problems 2 - Boundary Management
Faith Your ethos and values Law of the land Policy and Practice of the organisation Your contract and job description Resources Your job This is about managing boundaries – which is usually about time management, planning etc. Does it also apply to ethics? Is this order right? Adapted from Ingram & Harris (2001) Delivering Good Youth Work. London: Russel House Publishing. P. 58ff

8 Professional Boundaries
Dual-role relationships Sercombe, H. (2010) Youth Work Ethics London: Sage, p115ff

9 Dual Relationships “A youth worker may be the ‘closest’ person in a young person’s life. The youth work relationships is often deeply emotionally engaged; the youth worker is emotionally present. It isn’t unprofessional to love the young people you work with. On the contrary, it is precisely this kind of connection that can open possibilities for life to be different. However, this real, authentic emotional reaction to young people happens within the context of a youth work relationship, and is shaped and disciplined by that relationship.” (Sercombe 2010 p.121)

10 Managing Dual Relationships
Be clear about your role - you are a youth worker / pastor etc Be open with peers and managers - it’s easier to be honest when everyone knows Try to avoid working with the client alone – use your team. Are you the best person to counsel a family friend? Explain the dual role with the client - they will understand why your behaviour may be different in context Develop a policy or standard of working with your team - everyone is treated the same, rather than each one of you having to work it out alone. (Sercombe 2010 p.117f) All of this needs….Reflective practice

12 A reflective cycle is not just for college
Kolb Lewin – spiral towards a solution Green’s reflective cycle is corporate – it’s done as a group.

13 “Reason and free inquiry are the only effectual agents against error.”
Thomas Jefferson How do we know if our suggested action is right or wrong? Where do Christians get their authority? Scripture Church tradition The Holy Spirit Each other (community)

14 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Rom 12:2) Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. (Heb 5:13f) What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together…Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said. (1 Cor 14:26-29 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. (1 John 4:1) It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements…(Acts 15:28)
