3 Pertinent Topics New Safety Direction
Data Gathering, Analysis, Sharing (DGAS) Metrics 2. Have We Done the Job? 3. Partnering and Information Sharing

4 5.8 Billion People Will… …increasingly want to travel by air.
Asia excludes: India, China and Japan.

5 Growth is Accelerated by Certain Macro Factors
Recent traffic hotspots

6 Western-Built Commercial Jets
Major Accident Rate Western-Built Commercial Jets 1999 – 2012 Accident rate per million departures This chart shows both the major accident rate in accidents per million departures and the 5 year running average of that rate for commercial jets This chart is only for Western built aircraft since it involves rates As you can see, 2011 was a good year. The rate was a record low of .28. That is the lowest annual rate ever recorded. For the first time in a decade we are seeing a decreasing trend to the major accident rate………….. Let’s hope it continues The rate for 2012 reduced last years record rate by 50% to a record setting .14 major accidents per million departures ! Source: Ascend

7 Commercial Jet Major Accidents
2000 through 2012 20 19 19 19 15 16 17 17 14 13 13 13 10 11 This is a look at the last 12 years of commercial jet major accidents. The yellow bar is the total for the year, the blue portion is the number of Eastern built aircraft major accidents Even though Eastern built jets make up only about 3% of the active inventory, they accounted for 43% of the accidents this year. For those out there who think we have had constant improvement and really have everything figured out, take a close look. As you can see, this year is the first real improvement since 2001. 5 7 2001 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 10 11 12 Eastern Built

8 Issues Distraction from safety priority
Taking the record for granted Complacency Overwhelming demands of security Confusion over new safety systems SMS, SSP, FRMS Compromise of safety information

9 Solution – Expand Information Sharing
Information Sharing Entities - Organizations FSF, IATA, ICAO - Governments - Regulators - Airlines/Operators - Institutions

10 Safety Data Sharing Is Critical to Success of SMS
Need to accelerate the discipline of SMS World-wide Need for collaboration and expand outreach Need to integrate across domains –not just the airplane Global Harmonization
