1 “Learning is not a spectator sport.”
Bell Ringer “Learning is not a spectator sport.” -D. Blocher

2 Ms. Burrell asks each of her students how many minutes it takes to walk from his or her home to school. The students’ responses are in the table below. Students Minutes to school Paris 12 minutes Star 20 minutes Kameron 5 minutes Michael 11 minutes Malik 10 minutes Makayla 14 minutes Emmanuel 18 minutes Kecia 1. What is the average time it takes Ms. Burrell’s students to walk to school? 2. Which student spends the most amount of time walking from home to school? 3. Which student spends the least amount of time walking from home to school? 13minutes Star Kameron

3 Unit 4: Describing Data UNIT QUESTION: How can I represent, compare, and interpret sets of data? Standard: MCC9-12.S.ID.1-3, 5-9, SP.5 Today’s Question: How do I graphically represent data? Standard: MCC6.SP.5c & MCC9-12.S.ID.1

Standards MCC6.SP.5c, MCC9-12.S.ID.1, MCC9-12.S.1D.2 and MCC9-12.S.ID.3

6 Box Plot (Box &Whisker)
A plot showing the minimum, maximum, first quartile, median, and third quartile of a data set; the middle 50% of the data is indicated by a box. Example:

7 Box Plot: Pros and Cons Advantages: Shows 5-point summary and outliers
Easily compares two or more data sets Handles extremely large data sets easily Disadvantages: Not as visually appealing as other graphs Exact values not retained

8 Dot Plot A frequency plot that shows the number of times a response occurred in a data set, where each data value is represented by a dot. Example:

9 Dot Plot: Pros and Cons Advantages: Simple to make
Shows each individual data point Disadvantages: Can be time consuming with lots of data points to make Have to count to get exact total. Fractions of units are hard to display.

10 Histogram A frequency plot that shows the number of times a response or range of responses occurred in a data set. Example:

11 Histogram: Pros and Cons
Advantages: Visually strong Good for determining the shape of the data Disadvantages: Cannot read exact values because data is grouped into categories More difficult to compare two data sets

12 Bar Graph A graph that displays relative data sizes of many things with vertical or horizontal bars. Example:

13 Bar Graph: Pros and Cons
Advantages: Display data that can be organized into categories Can quickly compare the categories Disadvantages: Having continuous data (such as a person's height) then use a Histogram

14 Double Bar Graph A graph can be used to compare two data sets. Example:

15 Double Bar Graph: Pros and Cons
Advantages: key to distinguish between the two sets of data Disadvantages: Having continuous data (such as a person's age) then use a Histogram

16 Line Graph A graph displays data using line segments that shows information that is connected in some way (such as change over time). Example:

17 Line Graph: Pros and Cons
Advantages: A broken scale can be used when the data starts at a large number.  Show specific values of data, so if you are given one variable the other can easily be determined Disadvantages: It can only be used to show data over time You can change the way the data of a line graph appears, by not using consistent scales on the axis.

18 Double Line Graph A graph that can be used to compare how two related data sets change over time. Example:

19 Double Line Graph: Pros and Cons
Advantages: key to distinguish between the two sets of data Disadvantages: Having continuous data (such as a person's age) then use a Histogram

20 Circle Graph A graph that shows part of a whole. The entire circle represents 100% of the data and each sector represents a percent of the total. Example:

21 Histogram: Pros and Cons
Advantages: Visually strong Good for comparing each category of data to the whole set Helpful to illustrate profits as they use percentages Disadvantages: Two data sets cannot be compared and percentages do not provide exact figures
