mClass Expectations for 1st Grade
Here are the TRC goals for beginning, middle, and end of year. If you would like more specific information about each assessment measure check out the link below from WCPSS. You can always ask your child’s teacher as well! New TRC benchmark levels using ATLAS Book Set

mClass CHANGES The TRC book set has changed since last year.
The new set of books are leveled in the same way as before, but have been more rigorous than previous book sets. Beginning, middle, and end of year expectations have been modified to accommodate this change. Written comprehension questions are now optional starting at level F. Written questions are to be used to guide instruction and will not hold back a student from moving to the next level when assessing. Retelling questions and comprehension questions are using more difficult vocabulary and are more challenging even at the beginning levels (A-E).

Reading at Home We are so glad that you are reading with your child each night! Here are a few reminders about reading at home from our first grade team: Reading at home SHOULD BE FUN! We want students to love reading. Help them pick books they are interested in and give them lots of choice in what they read. When your child is reading, give them time to figure out tricky words and help if they are feeling frustration. We are working so hard during the school day on strategies and decoding techniques. Reading at home should be practice and enjoyable! Your child’s teacher will share with you tips and tricks during conferences on ways to help your child with the skills they specifically need. Read to your child!!! Listening to fluent, and expressive reading is great for kids. Parent Read-Alouds are encouraged just as much as listening to your child read each night.
