Why do certain organisms live in certain places?
Chapter 3B- Biomes Why do certain organisms live in certain places?
2
Climate Climate vs. Weather Weather- right now
Climate- average weather
3
Climate 5 main factors Temperature changes and precipitation
Hot or cold? Rain or hail or sleet or snow or freezing rain?
4
Climate 5 main factors Seasons
Bring changes in temperature and precipitation Caused by Earth’s tilt
5
Climate 5 main factors Latitude
Closer to equator- warmer, not much difference in seasons Farther from equator- colder, not much difference in seasons Middle (temperate zone)- warm and cool, big different in seasons
6
Climate 5 main factors Elevation High elevation- colder than normal
7
Climate 5 main factors Bodies of Water
Warm ocean currents warmer area Bodies of water change temperature slowly
8
Climate
9
Climate Polar Temperate Continental Temperate Marine Tropical Dry
10
Biomes Looking at climate zones PLUS biotic factors Biomes! 8 Biomes
Tundra Deciduous Forest Desert Savanna Coniferous Forest Grasslands Chaparral Tropical Rainforest
11
Biomes- Tundra Climate Zone: Polar Temperature: Low (Cooooooold)
Permafrost (frozen land) year round Little vegetation except moss, lichen, wildflowers Temperature: Low (Cooooooold) Long winters with very short summers Precipitation: Low Few inches to several feet of snow Examples of Life: Caribou, grizzly bears, polar bears
12
Biomes- Coniferous Forest
Climate Zone: Temperate Continental Full of conifers (pine tree type trees) Smells REALLY good Doesn’t let grass or other plants besides trees grow Temperature: Moderate to low Only 2 seasons each year Precipitation: Moderate to low Good amount of rain/ snow Examples of Life: Elk, wolverines, moose, woodpeckers, rabbits
13
Biomes- Deciduous Forest
Climate Zone: Temperate Continental (or Marine) Full of wide variety of trees Oak, birch, ash, and maple Temperature: Moderate Only 4 seasons each year Precipitation: Moderate Good amount of rain/ snow Examples of Life: Elk, wolverines, moose, woodpeckers, rabbits, raccoons, owls, etc
14
Biomes- Chaparral Climate Zone: Dry
Plants are typically tough with waxy outside Keeps in water and stops from being eaten Temperature: Moderate to High Cool, wet winters with warm, dry summers Precipitation: Low Droughts and fires are common Examples of Life: Deer and antelope
15
Biomes- Savanna Climate Zone: Temperate Continental
Lots of grass with trees far apart Not much grows because of seasonal rain Temperature: Moderate to High High enough that not much grows and seasons are due to rain not temperature Precipitation: Moderate but seasonal Rainy season: cm of rain Dry season: fires, parched animals Examples of Life: Lions, giraffes, wildebeests
16
Biomes- Grasslands Climate Zone: Temperate Continental
Sooooo much grass, but very little trees Not enough rain for trees Temperature: Moderate 4 Seasons Precipitation: Moderate Enough rain for animals and grass (25-75 cm), not enough for trees Examples of Life: Wild horses, birds, gazelles, other herbivores
17
Biomes- Tropical Rainforest
Climate Zone: Tropical Climate SO MANY PLANTS!! 3 layers of plants- emergent then canopy and understory is beneath Temperature: High Only 1 season due to year-round warm, humid air Precipitation: High Over 250 cm per year Examples of Life: poison dart frogs, birdwing butterflies, pythons, sloths, lemurs, geckos
18
Biomes- Desert Climate Zone: Dry Cactuses and succulents
made to not let water evaporate Temperature: High Change dramatically from daytime (SUPER HOT) to night (very chilly) Precipitation: Low 25 cm of rain Examples of Life: Rattlesnakes, kangaroo rats, reptiles, insects, spiders (more active at night)
