Fig. 1 Recruitment and eligibility for the EMPOWER study. Among the combined 287 patients who were ineligible, 179 (62%) patients were neither in pain nor taking medication for pain; 65 (23%) patients did not reside in a private residence; 28 (10%) patients could not be contacted to ascertain eligibility; seven (2%) patients did not have a family caregiver; six (2%) family caregivers were not fluent in English; and two (0.7%) patients were aged <18 years.
