-1600’s France, Britain, and Netherlands look to join Spain and Portugal by establishing colonies in America Dutch 1. established colonies in Caribbean to take advantage of sugar cane trade 2. established New Netherlands which was seized by the English and later renamed New York

B. French in Canada 1. French came to Canadian coast to fish for cod Samuel de Champlain established a French settlement in Quebec 3. Native Americans taught French the fur trade which led the French to explore the Great lakes area and along the MS River as far south as Louisiana

British Colonies 1. 1st British colony was Jamestown established in Difficult early years , success came when British were taught to grow tobacco by the Native Americans Pilgrims established Plymouth colony in an effort to find religious freedom 3. More and more British emigrated to North America to establish the 13 colonies along the east coast of North America

II. European colonies affect North America
Many Natives died from exposure to disease carried by Europeans (no immunities to small pox or measles) Natives are pushed west by the expansion of British colonies . They attempted to fight back but did not have the appropriate weapons Europeans did not understand the Native way of life, they felt it was the wrong way and the Europeans were right

The French used good Native relations to get Natives to fight with them. (learned battle techniques from them) 2. The French lost the war and were driven out of most of North America
