2
Acceleration Acceleration
Measures the change in an object’s velocity over time Units include a distance and a time squared Ex: mi/hr2, m/s2
3
Acceleration Types of Acceleration Same Direction of Motion
“Speeding Up” = A force is applied in the same direction causing the bike to speed up.
4
Acceleration Types of Acceleration Opposite Direction of Motion
“Slowing Down” = A force is applied in the opposite direction causing the bike to slow down.
5
Acceleration Types of Acceleration At angle to motion “Turning” + =
= A force is applied at an angle causing the bike to change direction. The speed may not change!
6
Acceleration Calculations A = velocity final – velocityinitial time

Acceleration Velocity-Time Graphs What is happening at point A?
What is happening at point B? What is happening at point C? What is happening at point D? How can an object be accelerating even if it is not speeding up or slowing down? Can you think of an amusement park ride where your speed is constant but you are still accelerating?
