I. Background Last time: States are divided, Kansas is bleeding, no more compromises The war lasted 4 years From ***700,000 Americans Died*** That is more Americans than WWI/WWII/Vietnam COMBINED How it begins: 1) The South Secedes - call themselves the “Confederate States of America” 7 states (Including Florida ;) ) 2) The Confederates shoot up a supply base in Charleston (Fort Sumter) 3) Lincoln began a Naval Blockade of the South, issued paper $, and drafted an army.

North vs South UNION -22m people -2m soldiers -Better agriculture -More manufacturing -Led by Ulysses Grant -Wants end to Slavery Strategy: -No Surrender until they join the Union -Anaconda Plan CONFEDERACY--9m people (but 4m are slaves) -900,000 Soldiers -Much less Railroad -Better leaders -Led by Robert E Lee -Wants economic right to Plantation Strategy: -War of attrition: wear em down like we did the British in revolutionary war -Get Brits to help

III. Important Battles -There were 8,000 Battles total!! For the first 3 years Union lost many battles because of terrible generals. Battle of Bull Run - first battle, C wins Battle of Antietam - 6,000 died in one day >< U won Battle of Vicksburg - U wins and now controls Mississippi river, splitting C Battle of Gettysburg - Turning point of war, 50,000 dead. Battle of Atlanta - burned C’s manufacturing/RR center to ground Why did so many die? THE GATLING GUN

How Lincoln did it: Anaconda Plan - Control the Mississippi and the seas, and starve em Emancipation Proclamation Free’d the Slaves Southern Slaves joined Union Army 180,000 joined Politics: secured British not joining confederacy, they abolished slavery in 1833 Gettysburg Address: Speech by Abe Lincoln “These men did not die in vain” NOW our country is truly by the people for the people (all, blacks and whites)

V. The South Surrenders 10 percent plan - Any Southern State can join the union if 10% of their population: 1) Accept these three new Amendments to the constitution: 13th - Slavery Abolished 14th - Born in America = Citizen + Equal rights to all races 15th - Can’t be denied right to vote based on color 2) 10% will not rebel and allow U troops uphold these laws Consequences of war: Reaffirmed existence of Union Strengthened power of Government Killed 700,000 Wounded 400,000 Left us $7 Billion in debt ($7,000,000,000)
