What do these 4 jobs have in common? Do you know what skills you have?
What skills are needed to do these jobs? What do these 4 jobs have in common? Do you know what skills you have? Ask the students what do we mean by skills? What skills would be useful for the pictured jobs? Teacher – Communication, Nurse – Caring, Farmer – Physical, Designer – creative. Get them to talk to the person sat next to them about what skills they have? Can they identify any? – Explain that it is difficult!!

What is important when selecting your options?
Compulsory subjects – you have to do it! You enjoy the subject You are good at the subject You want to study it more post 16 The job you want to do requires that you study it Try to get students to come up with their own ideas of what is important when choosing their options – there may be more than those selected

What should you avoid doing when choosing your options? Go through what you sho Good video to show: What you wouldn’t do when choosing your options – i.e. choose them because you like the teacher, your friend is doing it , your parents told you to, you think it will be easy.

What is it? One place to find all careers information for Y7 – Y13 You can change your plans in Career Tools Loads of information and career tools. Use it every year to help you make decisions and learn more about your options. Your report moves up with you every year

Explain that Careerpilot is a free website used across the South of England. Helping students to find out about all of their options. Important for finding out more about jobs and courses & support when making key decisions like choosing GCSE options. Explain that the website can be used to save their choices – they can bookmark pages to come back to later. They can record the jobs that they are interested in etc. in Career Tools and that creates their report.

They will be starting with ‘Start with you’, when they click they will see the options, they should choose activities for their age.

2. Use start with a subject
They will be starting with ‘Start with you’, when they click on Start with a subject. They can explore where a few of their favourite subjects will take them

3. Look at ’choices at 13/14’ or look at the ‘GCSE’ pathway to find out more about your choices.
They should go to the Explore your options section and choose Choices at 14 or look at Pathways and choose GCSEs, they can find out more about the choices they will be making in Y8 or 9 depending on the structure in a school.

4. Complete the Pre 16 Skills Map. Add one or two of your own examples of activities you have done. They should complete the Pre 16 Skills Map. It starts with questions about things they have done already in life and school and then shows them how these map to skills that employers eant.

The Skills Banks can then be used when they come to apply. They now need 30 minutes plus to do the activities

5: Explore job sectors and jobs, look at the skills needed. ‘Add' the ones you might be interested in to your Career Tools. They should go to the jobs section. They are going to do the quiz and explore jobs.

When they have their job quiz results they can explore some of the sectors that seem to most fit them. They can drill downn to a sub section.

As they have done the Skills Map they can now see their skills alongside the skills needed for the job in any Careerpilot job profile. They can add more of their own examples.

3. Add your sectors and jobs
A reminder that each of their choices and results are saved within their Career Tools (as long as they register on the site and select them when they are using the site). Their task is to pick two job sectors they are interested in (they can have more) and/or review any job sectors or jobs they have added previously. They can add more or delete, they can change their mind later, nothing is fixed!

Who choose one of these subjects to look at?
When they come back as a group, ask who chose what subjects to look at. If there is time ask what jobs a subject could lead on to – particularly a job they hadn’t heard of before.

Did anybody get a over 80% match on any skill?
Ask about their skills and see who had more that an 80% match for a skill. Make the point that even 33% is a great start and they can look at ways to get even more examples of their skills.
