Apprenticed under Ghiberti and learned metallurgy and the fabrication of metals Assisted in creating bronze doors for Florence cathedral which gave him a deep understanding of ornamentation and classic forms

2 A Few Facts about David Based on the biblical story of David and Goliath (depicts David standing on the head of Goliath) His sword used to slay Goliath rests on a victory wreath Created because the Medici’s wanted a statue like Donatello’s first David David is portrayed in such a way because he is a young boy, a youth. There is a juxtaposition between the young boy portrayed and the person who slayed the giant Goliath The people of Florence identified themselves with David-like him they believed they defeated their enemy (the Duke of Milan) with the help of God

3 Medici Family -Medicis were impressed by Donatello’s earlier, marble David -Placed in center of Palazzo Medici courtyard -David represented Florence -Wanted to show “ownership” of the symbol of David -Medicis thought they were responsible for Florence’s wealth
