Electromagnetic Waves
Electromagnetic waves are made up of oscillating electric and magnetic fields. All electromagnetic waves travel at the speed of light, c, in a vacuum. c = speed of light = 3.0 x 108 ms-1 Electromagnetic waves do not require medium to travel.
9
Radio Wave f = 3 kHz ~ 300 MHz λ = 100 km ~ 1 m
11
Micro Wave f = 300 MHz ~ 300 GHz λ = 1 m ~ 1 mm
13
Infrared f = 300 GHz ~ 400 THz λ = 1 mm ~ 750 nm
16
Visible Light f = 400 THz ~ 770 THz λ = 750 nm ~ 390 nm
18
Ultra violet (UV) f = 770 THz ~ 30 PHz λ = 390 nm ~ 10 nm
21
X-ray f = 30 PHz ~ 30 EHz λ = 10 nm ~ 0.01 nm
24
Gamma ray f = higher than 30 EHz λ = shorter than 0.01 nm
