Test your own unconscious bias
Welcome to this iTutorial on unconscious bias. Before we begin to look at unconscious bias in detail, it is worth considering why Prospect is addressing this issue. From talking to members, it was clear that one of the key issues affecting women, particularly those working in STEM fields, was unconscious bias. Performance management outcomes in both the Civil Service and telecoms sectors show potential bias in decision making against black and disabled workers. Our surveys of women in STEM show that people who work part-time generally find it very difficult to be taken seriously for promotion opportunities. As a result the Professional Women’s Working Group highlighted this as a key area to work on and in particular to make it a priority to embed this work into branch activity. It is hoped that this iTutorial will assist you, the reps, to tackle unconscious bias in your workplace.

Do you have an unconscious bias?
Click the box to left or the right depending on the instruction When you are ready to begin, start your timer Start at the top left Make your selection as quickly as you can Do not correct any errors Keep a note of your time when you are finished Proceed to the next slide On the next two slides you will see that a table which is split into two columns. Your task is to click the box to the right or left of each word depending on which description fits the word. This exercise is timed so set your timer when you are ready to begin. Flower names Insect names Pleasant words Unpleasant words Start at the top left and make your selection marks as quickly as you can. As soon as you have worked your way down the left column, continue without pause to do the right column in the same way. Do all the words in order. Don’t skip any. Definitely do not stop or backtrack to correct errors – that will make your results less accurate. Keep a note of your time (in seconds) and count up how many wrong answers you had (these are the boxes which have turned red) to complete Slide 1 and then do the same for Slide 2.

Results For each slide, add the time it took you to complete it (in seconds) to the number of errors you made Subtract your total for slide 2 from slide 1 A higher score for slide 1 than slide 2 shows an automatic preference for insects over flowers A higher score for slide 2 than slide 1 shows an automatic preference for flowers over insects Score Automatic Preference 18 strong 12 – 17 moderate 6 – 11 slight <6 too small to say For each slide, add your time in seconds to your number of errors. Now subtract the total from the second slide from the first slide. A higher score for slide 1 than slide 2 indicates an automatic preference for insects relative to flowers However, much more likely is a higher score for slide 2 than slide 1, which indicates an automatic preference for flowers relative to insects. A difference of 18 or more between the two sheets shows a strong automatic preference one way or the other. 12 – 17 indicates a moderate automatic preference 6 – 11 reflects a slight automatic preference Less that 6 - too small to indicate a preference
