Task 1 A British tourist is visiting New York and Newark, New Jersey. They want to find out what’s happening back in the UK in the news by visiting the BBC news website: Trace the route that a request packet might take from Newark to the BBC servers. Draw this route on a map of the world. Enter bbc.co.uk into to see the route. Note the map that you might get from these online tools may not be accurate. You can create a more accurate map yourself: Enter each of the IP addresses from the route into this will show you precisely where that IP address is located in the world. Use the zoom tool to zoom out to see the bigger picture. Plot this on a plain map of the world, numbering each step. Use curved lines to join up the dots as the route will be easier to see if some lines overlap. Task 2 Match the full version of each acronym and then match it to its appropriate description. WWW <Answer> A domain name which includes the host server name, e.g. www, mail, ftp etc. URL <Answer> A collection of pages that reside on computers connected to the Internet. Concept created by Sir Tim Berners-Lee. DNS <Answer> A unique address which is given to a single network device. It performs a similar function to your home address. IP address <Answer> This is the full address of a resource on the Internet. This allows a browser to request it from a webserver. FQDN <Answer> An internationally agreed structure which classifies the area an Internet resource resides. Structured into a hierarchy.
