Chemical Quantities Chemical reactions occur on a particle by particle basis. BUT, because these particles are so small (atoms and molecules), it is not practical or possible to count them. We CAN, however, easily determine the mass of a huge quantity of particles, using a balance. Then use the idea of a MOLE to convert between mass and the number of particles.

÷ molar mass ÷ 6.02 x 1023 x 6.02 x 1023 mass (g) moles
number of particles moles use Avogadros number use periodic table ÷ 6.02 x 1023 x molar mass x 6.02 x 1023
9
Chemical Quantities The MOLE is hugely important when dealing with chemical quantities. The MOLE is the SI unit for chemical quantities. Soooo, what is a mole in chemistry?
10
First, some analogous quantities you're probably familiar with:
How many things are in a pair? How many in a dozen? How many in a gross? How many papers are in a ream?
11
MOLE The mole is a huge (but specific) number of things!
This number is called Avogadro's number. A mole is 6.02 x 1023 things (a shorthand way of writing 602,000,000,000,000,000,000,000)
