Impact of Silicones 2016
2
What Are Silicones? Silicones are a family of specialty, high-performance materials. The silicone family includes siloxanes and silanes, all of which are widely used in thousands of products Due to their molecular structure, silicones can be manufactured in many forms including: solids liquids semi-viscous pastes greases oils rubber Silicones have an exceptional breadth of chemical and physical properties. Silicones are flexible and resist moisture, chemicals, heat, cold and ultraviolet radiation. Products made with silicones take on these and other important properties so they are more stable, more aesthetically pleasing, easier to use or apply, and longer lasting Personal Care & Consumer Products Industry 2016

Industry Silicones manufacturing alone directly employs about 30,000 people worldwide, evenly distributed between Europe, the Americas, and Asia Significantly greater numbers apply to downstream employment – it is estimated that up to 14 million employees may be involved in some form of economic activity that involves silicone products across the globe 1.7 million people in Europe 2.3 million people in the Americas 10 million people in Asia Personal Care & Consumer Products Industry 2016

Personal care & Consumer products
A total of 357,000 tons of silicone product was sold to the personal care and consumer products industry, generating sales of $1.9 billion In 2013, global sales in the personal care sector were $454 billion, with sales revenues increasing. The value of skin care products alone was worth $105 billion In 2013, the household care products market alone in Brazil, China, the UK and the US totaled $143 billion The sector supports millions of jobs directly and indirectly About 2.8 million workers in the US 2.5 million jobs supported by the industry in China About 1.5 million in Europe Personal Care & Consumer Products Industry 2016

Silicone polymers and cyclic siloxanes are used in the personal care sector as a solvent and carrier for many products, including: Deodorants Hair, skin and sun care products Makeup Silicones provide a glossy or smooth feel in the final products, with processing benefits such as: Transparency Lack of taste Lack of odor Low skin irritation Low surface tension Anti-foaming properties Volatility (evaporates quickly which reduces drying time) Personal Care & Consumer Products Industry 2016

In consumer products, silicones are used in: Household polishes Waxes Laundry detergents Cooking utensils Sporting goods Baby and infant products Silicones contribute to energy savings in personal care products manufacturing since a stable emulsion period is achieved in a short period of time and at room temperature Silicones help reduce energy consumption in washing machines Personal Care & Consumer Products Industry 2016

Silicones are used as a cleaning agent enhancer, fabric softener, and antifoaming agent in laundry detergents With their use, greenhouse gas emissions resulting from antifoaming detergents are estimated between 52 kg CO2e/kg to 159 kg CO2e/kg Silicones improve the efficiency of the active cleaning agent, reducing the amount of detergent needed and the temperature of the washing cycle By using products made with silicone, you generate on average 9 times less greenhouse gases than were emitted during manufacturing and disposal of that product Personal Care & Consumer Products Industry 2016
