1 GIG Read the passage and mark your answers on your whiteboard. NOT ON THE PAPER. Questions 3-4.

2 The Periodic Table in Chemical Reactions

3 Remember Groups and Periods?
A group is a column (vertical) and a period is a row (horizontal).

4 Groups Have Similar Properties
How did Mendeleev predict so many properties of undiscovered elements? One major fact he relied upon: groups have the same number of valence electrons, which is a major indicator of how they will react.

5 Let’s Look at How Halogens React with Metals
Halogens have 7 valence electrons, one short of the desired number 8. It turns out that atoms that are one away from a full valence shell are extremely reactive. First, we’ll see chlorine, bromine and iodine.

6

7 Hey, They Skipped Fluorine!
Reactivity in this group goes down as elements get heavier, as we just saw. So, the lightest halogen, fluorine… Note that there is no source of heat or flame in this video.

8

9 The Periodic Table Read the information about the periodic table. With your table partners, identify the elements in the questions that follow. You will not turn it in, but Mr. Ryan will check for completion near the end of class. Finished early? Work on your genius hour project.

10 Homework Study for periodic table and elements test on Friday.

11 Closure Answer on your whiteboard:
Why do fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine all do similar things to metals?
