Vision MiraCosta’s Online Education leverages an increasingly rich array of teaching and learning resources, experiences, and environments. MiraCosta College will lead in providing effective and innovative Online Education as an integral means of equitable access and student success. Mission MiraCosta College embraces student-centered, engaging, and accessible Online Education that meets student needs, enhances the learning experience, and broadens access to superior educational opportunities and support services.

Key terms Distance Education (DE): instruction in which students and instructor are separate, but have regular substantive interaction through technology (Federal) DE Class: A class where over 50% of instructional class time occurs via Distance Education. (state/ACCJC) DE Program: A program where 50% or more of the required courses have been approved for offering as DE classes. (ACCJC)

Key terms 100% Online Class: The entire class may be completed online. (MiraCosta) Hybrid Class: Some instructional time occurs outside of the classroom. May be DE or non-DE. May be entirely online except exams. (MiraCosta) Online Education: an expansive term encompassing technologies, services, resources, programs, classes, and teaching/learning experiences that are mediated at least partially through the Internet. Several years ago Mary Benard challenged departments to narrow the on-line/on-ground gap to under 5%. Have done that with retention. Historically these gaps are in the 8-12% range here, across CA, and nationwide. Retention rate gap in 2013/14: 7.5%, in 2014/15: 6.2%; in 2015/16: 4.4%; in 2016/17: 4.9% (DE improved .8% while non-DE improved 1.3%) 2017/18: 4.3% MiraCosta DE retention is 80.9% (state: 83.5%). How Online Ed Supports Student Success
Online academic support services: tutoring, writing center, library Online counseling/advising and (increasingly) other student services Student Orientation to Online Learning Increasing classes using low- and no-cost digital course materials Faculty development for enhanced online course design and teaching Robust set of online teaching & learning tools Canvas is used in 93% of our credit classes this semester. This continues a steady, slight year-to-year increase in the use of a course management system – the transition did not impact that. Child Development department now offering a Zero Textbook Cost certificate. About 10 of our teaching faculty and many of our counselors have participated to some extent in OEI-related activities – developing classes, participating in professional development, reviewing classes Course Exchange timeline changed a bit with renewal of the CVC-OEI grant this year; now won’t be implemented here until at least fall 2019 OEI provides us access to tools like Canvas, NetTutor, Cranium Café, (Proctorio, Plagiarism detection)

Completion of Canvas transition Designation of ZTC and Low Textbook Cost (LTC) classes in SURF Continued Online Education Initiative participation Student Orientation to Online Learning has now served nearly 2700 students Canvas is used in 93% of our credit classes this semester. This continues a steady, slight year-to-year increase in the use of a course management system – the transition did not impact that.
