Impact of Silicones 2016
2
What Are Silicones? Silicones are a family of specialty, high-performance materials. The silicone family includes siloxanes and silanes, all of which are widely used in thousands of products Due to their molecular structure, silicones can be manufactured in many forms including: solids liquids semi-viscous pastes greases oils rubber Silicones have an exceptional breadth of chemical and physical properties. Silicones are flexible and resist moisture, chemicals, heat, cold and ultraviolet radiation. Products made with silicones take on these and other important properties so they are more stable, more aesthetically pleasing, easier to use or apply, and longer lasting Transportation Industry 2016

Industry Silicones manufacturing alone directly employs about 30,000 people worldwide, evenly distributed between Europe, the Americas, and Asia Significantly greater numbers apply to downstream employment -- it is estimated that up to 14 million employees may be involved in some form of economic activity that involves silicone products across the globe 1.7 million people in Europe 2.3 million people in the Americas 10 million people in Asia Transportation Industry 2016
4
Transportation A total of 120,000 tons of silicone product was sold to the transportation industry in 2013, generating sales of $1.2 billion. Global automobile production is expected to exceed 100 million vehicles of all types by 2017 Direct employment in the automotive industry globally is 6.8 million people (2005) 1.5 million employees in the Americas 2.6 million employees in Asia 2.6 million employees in Europe The automotive industry generated €1.8 trillion in 2005 in global revenues €533 billion sales in the Americas €670 billion sales in Europe €625 billion sales revenues in Asia Transportation Industry 2016

Transportation Silicone rubber, resin elastomers, sealants, lubricants and plastic additives are used extensively in automotive and aviation components Silicones make transportation: more efficient safer more reliable Transportation Industry 2016

APPLICATIONS Healthcare Industry 2016
7
Transportation Silicones are used in a large number of internal components in automobiles including, but not limited to: Airbags Component connections Ignition coils Airbag coating and sealing Powertrains Radiator seals and hoses Engine seals Turbo charge hosing Gaskets Lubrication for pistons Covering for seatbelts Electronic parts coatings Transportation Industry 2016

Transportation Highly durable, gastight fabrics are crucial to the performance of airbags so that they inflate with precise timing and pressure. Silicones help provide: airtight seals, fabric strength, and durability, and ultimately contribute to increased safety and reductions in road fatalities Because silicones can withstand exposure to very high temperatures, salt, rain, and sun rays, they are used to protect and insulate engine parts to improve vehicle safety throughout the vehicle’s lifetime Silica-reinforced “green” tires reduce rolling resistance, leading to fuel savings Silicones make an impressive contribution to reducing fuel consumption of cars and ships significantly reducing the CO2 footprint of the transport sector By using products made with silicone, you generate on average 9 times less greenhouse gases than were emitted during manufacturing and disposal of that product Transportation Industry 2016

Transportation For the shipping industry, silicone-based paints and coatings are safer alternatives to traditional marine coatings and paints. Silicones help reduce the buildup of dirt and film, improving fuel efficiency. For large cargo ships, this improvement is important since fuel consumption is large In aircraft manufacturing and aviation components, silicones are used in: Black box encapsulate Instrument seals Windscreen seals Radom seals Weather-strip adhesives Sealants for in-flight entertainment systems Lighting Cargo door seals Fuel cell and electronic device coatings Fuel tank sealant Transportation Industry 2016
