1 Financial Aid How Much Should I Borrow?
Kim Kane, Director of Financial Aid here again. In this presentation we’ll discuss strategies for determining how much in loans to borrow. This presentation assumes information contained in the Cost of Attendance presentation, so please view it first.

Federal Student Loans Limits Unsubsidized loans have lower interest and fees than Grad Plus. There are federal limits for unsubsidized loans: $20,500 Most Programs $33,000 COP 1st and 2nd year $40,500 COM/DO 1st and 2nd year TUITION $ ,720 STUDENT HEALTH FEE $ TECHNOLOGY FEE $ HEALTH INSURANCE $ ,788 BOOKS & SUPPLIES $ ,310 COMPUTER $ ,975 *LOAN FEES (Estimated) $ PERSONAL $ ,046 ROOM & BOARD $ ,514 TRANSPORTATION $ ,764 TOTAL $ ,867 You may be eligible for: Federal Unsubsidized Loan Federal Direct Grad Plus Loan OR Private Alternative Loan Total $ ,000 $ ,867 $ ,867 This first example shows a cost of attendance for a COP class of 2023 student. For all students, your total aid for loans, scholarships and work student cannot exceed the total COA for your program.  The Unsubsidized loan limits for our TUC programs are shown here according to the allowable limits per federal regulation.  Grad Plus funds are available for the balance as long as you do not have adverse credit history. 3 A word about loan fees The loan fees included in your COA are for unsubsidized loans only since not all students who borrow use Grad Plus. Make sure to include the additional percentage for Grad Plus that will be deducted especially if you are trying to restrict your borrowing to just enough to cover tuition and fees or a specific amount of living expenses. The Federal Loan information on our website can help or Once you have accepted your awards, you an also see the amount scheduled to disburse on TouroOne. Contact financial aid for a spreadsheet to help you calculate how much will be disbursed each semester after loan fees – especially if you are borrowing only for tuition. Be aware of available funds for each year of your program. Also make sure you budget for summer when you don’t have courses. If you do have summer courses, funding arrives in late June so plan accordingly. More on that in How Much Should I Borrow?

In this example the maximum Unsub for DO students is 40,500 To cover the balance this student would need to borrow 62,478 Highlighted items total -40,500 Unsub $21, 978 remaining 22,960 Grad Plus needed ($979 loan fees)

Depending on program this can increase your coa by $1,400 - $2,300 depending on program and year to give you an small end of year cushion.
