Sure, blame the dog for shooting your son
By Michael Tefft • on November 24, 2008 An Oregon man said his son was accidentally shot while he and his son were hunting in Tillamook Bay. According to the father his son was injured when their Labrador dog Drake jumped into the boat, triggering a shotgun, while the son was standing outside the boat in the bay. The shotgun blew a hole in the boat before striking the son in the legs and buttocks. The father says he’s not angry with the dog, and neither is his son. According to the father Drake is a good dog and the shooting is “just one of those things.” I don’t think “just one of those things” is an appropriate description of what happened. Apparently neither father or son has ever taken a course on firearm or hunting safety. When transporting a shotgun in a boat or car the shotgun should not be loaded. All modern shotguns have a safety which should have been on. But it seems this shotgun not only had the safety off but it had a shell in the chamber. This was an accident waiting to happen and both father and son are fortunate that neither one of them or someone else had already been injured or killed. I even question whether the dog triggered the shotgun. Anyone this foolish with firearms is probably stupid enough to make up a story like this to cover their embarrassment. I read about hunting accidents like this all the time and it is amazing how the story seldom mentions how carelessly the firearm involved was being handled. I can only hope that both father and son realize how fortunate they were that the son was not killed and will be smart enough to take a firearm and hunting safety course. As for Duke, I hope that he does not end up being shot by these two the next time they go hunting.
