Griffin Brown - UNH Sustainability Fellow – Summer 2019 Mentors: Peter Britz and Jacob Levenson, City of Portsmouth Municipal Data Compared to 2012, the City of Portsmouth has been able to reduce carbon equivalent emissions by 34.2%. * Compared to 2006, municipal energy usage has decreased 13.3%. All municipal sectors experienced decreases in carbon equivalent emissions compared to * Community Data Electrical usage increased 2.7% from 2012, however emissions from electrical usage was reduced by 56%. Municipal use accounted for 3.5% of all electricity usage in 2018. Success Stories Compared to 2012, Buildings and Facilities cut emissions by 2666 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. Largest quantitative decrease found in municipal data. Nearly one third of emissions reduced from 2012. Emissions from Water and Wastewater locations was decreased by 53.6%. With LED upgrades, the city was able to decrease carbon equivalent emissions from lighting by 80.6%. Sustainable initiatives in Portsmouth have helped to reduce Municipal greenhouse gas emissions by over a third of the 2012 amount. [Newengland.com]
