Figure 1 Expression of Lrig1 at birth (P0) and after development into an adult mouse. At P0 Lrig1 is expressed weakly (light pink) in interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) of the myenteric region (ICC-MY) that are developed and functional at this stage. ICC-MY lie between the circular (CM) and longitudinal (LM) muscle layers. CSMCs express Lrig1 at birth (pink to red cells). Cells nearest the submucosal surface (rightmost edge) show the most intense expression of Lrig1 (red). During postnatal development, expression of Lrig1 decreases in the bulk of the circular muscle layer and in ICC-MY. Cells near the submucosal surface of the circular muscle layer retain robust expression of Lrig1. These cells also label with antibodies against c-Kit and ANO1 (not depicted), which are markers of ICC. The Lrig1+ cells are ICC-deep muscular plexus (DMP), and they lie in close association with the varicose processes of enteric motor neurons (EMN; blue). Fate mapping studies showed that ICC-DMP develop from smooth muscle cells of the circular muscle layer, and these cells do not develop in Lrig1-/- mice.6 Gastroenterology , DOI: ( /j.gastro ) Copyright © 2015 AGA Institute Terms and Conditions
