1 Mrs. D’Emilio 7th Grade Reading
Welcome Parents!

2 From the administration
All personal electronic devices (cell phones, tablets, iPods, smart watches, audio ear pieces/air pods, headphones, etc) DO need to be turned off once the school day begins at 8:50am. We would like to clarify though that only cell phone devices must remain in the student’s locker until the end of the school day. If cell phones are seen or heard during the school day without permission, it may result in disciplinary action.

3 My Goals To help make students stronger readers across all academic classes To give students the academic and social skills needed to be a successful 7th grader and to progress to 8th Grade and beyond To provide a safe, supportive, comfortable, and fun classroom environment To help students discover new interests and develop them To make them stronger readers across all academic classes To give them the academic and social skills you need to progress to 8th Grade and High School. To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment. To help you discover new interests and develop them. To help develop a LOVE of reading!

4 Class Rules Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other. Our class rules are: Be respectful and responsible Be organized and follow directions Be on time Be prepared

5 What the first nine weeks will look like:
Skills Review Novel Study Plot Development Literary Elements

6 Themes Unit One (1st 9 weeks) – The Choices We Make
Unit Two – (2nd 9 weeks) - What Influences My Choices Unit Three – (3rd 9 weeks) - Choice Consequences Unit Four – (4th 9 weeks) - How We Choose To Act

7 We will be completing 3-4 Novel Studies in class this year
We will read various types of literary text that align with the Language Arts curriculum. Our possible chosen texts include topics related to the theme for the year. Actual novels used in class will be announced in plenty of time to get a copy if needed/wanted

8 Summative Retake Opportunities and Requirements 2019-2020
In 7th grade Reading, students can expect a minimum of three summative assessments per quarter. Students disappointed with their score on a summative assessment will be afforded the opportunity to retake 1 summative (of their choice) each nine weeks for the first semester. For the second semester, the students will be afforded 1 retake for the entire course. These opportunities will be available before school, after school, or during class. There are requirements to be fulfilled in order to be eligible for a retake. Students who do not meet these requirements forfeit their chance to retake a test. Remediation/review will be provided by the teacher and must be completed by the student prior to the re-take. Student will have no missing assignments which includes graded and non- graded (homework) assignments. It is recommended, but up to the student to take advantage of retake opportunities.  Reasoning: Data has reflected very minimal, if any, improvement in scores when students are not required to complete the supplementary work prior to the original test. Although, they still have to complete remediation assignments after the original test in order to re-test, it’s a much smaller window for preparation. In addition, we are meticulous in our opportunities to prepare and support our students vertically for high school.

9 AC Requirements Placement is based on performance/achievement in specific academic areas Opportunity for challenges that foster interest and nurture academic competence Must maintain an average of 80% or higher in AC classes (end of each grading period) If grade drops below and 80%, the student will be place on academic probation with an intervention plan developed and implemented Probationary status remains in effect for a minimum of one official grading period If student brings the grade up to an 80% or above during that grading period, the probation is lifted If the student’s grade remains below 80%, they will be removed from that AC class Students not meeting the criteria may be placed on probation

14 The best way to contact me is via email
You will find that I am reasonable and fair. Please communicate with your child first. Then, please communicate with me first if you have any further questions or concerns. If we can not resolve the issue together, then we can seek the assistance of an administrator. Thank you for coming tonight and helping support your child’s education.
