Think + Share: Civil Rights in the Middle Ages vs 2014 Canada
From what we know of the Middle Ages in Europe so far, could we say that individuals have more or less rights than us today in Canada in 2014? Please phrase your responses like this: There are __________ (more/less) civil rights in Canada today compared to the Middle Ages because __________ (evidence).

While watching the following videos, try to think of a definition of civil rights.

Definition for Civil Rights…?
Let’s make one as a class. Once done all the videos, establish a working definition together, helping them separate definitions/explanations from examples/evidence. Depending on the mood, you could do any number of strategies- think pair share, have a few students write on the board. Hopefully the following can be emphasised in the definition: the relationship between citizens and the government privileges and freedoms protection from abuse by the government

Where do civil rights exist?
Question: Do they exist in the Middle Ages in Europe? Please phrase your responses like this: Civil rights __________ (exist/don’t exist) in the Middle Ages in Europe because __________ (evidence). Question: Do they exist in Canada in 2014? Please phrase your responses like this: Civil rights __________ (exist/don’t exist) in Canada today because __________ (evidence). Where do civil rights exist? Did they exist in the middle ages in Europe? (again, claim + evidence) Do they exist today in Canada in 2014? (again, claim + evidence) Emphasise that just because civil rights exist, it doesn’t mean they are recognized everywhere and, also doesn’t mean that governments will always follow them. Emphasise that “civil rights” was not a concept or even words that had any meaning in Europe during the middle ages; they are a very modern idea that we can apply retrospectively, but that we must do so with caution [this is an idea we have already talked about, that history is a story based on available evidence, and often labels are applied retrospectively]
