Some Goals for Your First Year
Familiarize yourself with campus research organization, especially within Arts and Sciences Define/refine short and long term research goals and strategies to seek funding Subscribe to the electronic mailing lists maintained by the Proposal Development Office Attend seminars and workshops on campus Think “mentors,” plural Make research an everyday activity; schedule and protect time Seek input and feedback When starting to work on a proposal, contact Kyna Estes or Mary Boulton well in advance of your deadline Complete any preparatory tasks (IACUC or IRB training if relevant; CoI Disclosure) Research organization includes more than funding resources. Center for Health Equity Transformation (CHET)
Two-fold mission: Enhance capacity of current UK researchers to effectively compete for numerous funding opportunities to conduct high impact health equity research. Grow the number, capacity, and synergy of health equity researchers through training and professional development to undertake innovative, transdisciplinary science. *CHET was established due to a confluence of circumstances: KY’s poor health profile, the disproportionate health disparities experienced by rural, racial/ethnic and sexual minorities, and low SES.; Alignment with UK’s Strategic Plan; Benchmarks have health centers; It’s a fundable area; Health equity researchers across campus who are interested in joining forces. Strategies include: bringing together a critical mass of health equity researchers (including new hires); Pilot grant competition; Provide an enriching environment though seminar sessions, methods workshops, and other opportunities to foster interdisciplinary research collaborations Strategies include: Hire, co-locating and supporting critical mass health equity scholars (possible creation of a PI Academy for junior scholars); Creation of a Student Ambassador Program for undergraduates ; Develop institutional training grants (T32, Programs to Increase Diversity or PRIDE fellowships); Enhance the DREAM Scholars Program; Expand opportunities for promoting underrepresented faculty hires and retention. *Directly by Nancy Schoenberg *Likely housed in RB2
