What is it? Privacy: Cambridge dictionary definition: “Someone’s right to keep their personal matters/relationships secret or the state of being alone” Examples: ”I hate sharing a bedroom, I never get to any privacy” “The new law is designed to protect peoples privacy”

Impacts today Technology: many new forms of technology may have issues with privacy Biometrics: uses video surveillance to identify faces of individuals in a crowd Video surveillance: everything is being captured with cameras all over the world Online/e-commerce: hackers have been known to find/access information online Workplace monitoring: this is done in a variety of ways such as video surveillance or monitoring Wireless communications/tracking: most people don’t realize that whenever their cell phone is on it has the potential to be used to show your current location Data profiling: whenever people shop or complete surveys data is collected and sold to other companies in order to target potential customers

Privacy in the classroom
For teachers this topic has many impacts in the classroom Technology is becoming ever more prevalent in the classroom and with that comes issues with privacy Currently many devices are used to assist with teaching and this can leave both student/teacher data vulnerable and not in compliance with FERPA I think that it is important to discuss these issues with students because it is something that they will have to be aware of their whole life With privacy also comes trust so I think it is important for teachers to establish a level of trust with students by not disclosing private information With younger students it might be harder to approach this topic but I think it could be done in a non-direct way

Why should we care? I do care about this topic because it something that is getting more and more complicated A lot of new technology breaches our privacy and people are unaware We don’t really know how much of our information is out there or who has access to it We don’t always know what our data is being used for Even though I don’t have anything to hide I’m still entitled to my privacy Our information is sometimes sold for commercial gain People can take data and use it to impersonate or steal peoples identities
