People who use care services may be subject to inequality in a number of ways. They may experience Individual discrimination due to the prejudices of others Institutional discrimination as a result of organisations failing to provide appropriate services Structural discrimination as attitudes are common throughout society

Despite anti-discriminatory legislation peoples life chances are still affected by prejudice and discrimination. This is shown by ; National statistics Press reports Individuals prospects

Exposure to discrimination may affect an individuals self-image. If people have a poor self-image they will have low self-esteem which will limit opportunities.

Possible outcomes of discrimination on the self Estrangement from society Expecting to be rejected or excluded Low self-esteem Responding to self-fulfilling prophecies by not achieving Low self-worth

Conclusion An individual with a good self-image and high self-esteem will see rejection as a short- term setback. If a person’s self-image has been eroded by constant exposure to prejudice, discrimination and abuse, then they may find it much more difficult to handle setbacks.
