Sewage Treatment Fats, Oil, Grease (FOG)
Fats, Oils & Grease (FOG) discharged in the sewer system can disrupt the flow of wastewater, and cause harm to lift stations and the treatment plant. FOG is the major contributing factor to sanitary sewer overflows and back ups. Annually, the cost to clean FOG out of the sewer system and prevent these problems has been growing. To help protect the system, the users and the environment, and keep user costs steady, Glenbard Wastewater Authority has implemented a FOG reduction program.

Sewage Treatment Hazardous Chemicals
Properly store and dispose of household cleaners, chemicals, and oils! What’s the issue? Antifreeze, household cleaners, gasoline, pesticides, oil paints, solvents, and motor oil are just some of the common household products that can enter our storm drains. Help keep these out of our lakes and streams. Instead of putting these items in the trash, down the storm drain, or on the ground, take them to a local hazardous waste center or collection day. What are some helpful tips? Here are some simple steps you can take to carefully dispose of household wastes and help keep our water clean. Give them a try. A few simple changes can make a big difference! Identify it. Be aware of household products that can harm children, pets, and the environment. The words “danger,” “caution,” “warning,” or “toxic” indicate that you need to be careful in how you use and dispose of the product.

Sewage Treatment Pharmaceuticals
Disposal of unused or unwanted pharmaceuticals is an emerging and complex environmental issue. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is working with various stakeholders to find convenient and environmentally responsible ways for residents to manage waste pharmaceuticals. Don’t Flush! The age-old advice of flushing pharmaceuticals down the toilet is now considered to be the least desirable of all alternatives. For many years many households and businesses have gotten into the habit of flushing waste pharmaceuticals down the toilet or pouring them down the drain because it is low cost and appears to be the simplest way to prevent unintended use or other diversion. However, wastewater treatment plants and septic systems are generally not designed to treat pharmaceutical waste.

Sewage Treatment Wipes Wipes Clog Pipes and Pumps!
Many household products are labeled and marketed as disposable; many baby hygiene products are labeled both disposable and flushable. And while these products may be marketed as a convenience item in this way, the truth is that these household wipes and cleaning towelettes have the ability to clog and stop up not only the sewer line on your property, but also can cause blockage and service problems in the public sewer system and pump stations.
11
Sewage Treatment Wipes
Unlike toilet paper, these products don’t break down once they are flushed. They can cause blockages in your on‐site sewer, especially older pipelines that may have greases, roots, or other obstructions already existing. A repair of the on‐site sewer line can leave the home owner or business owner with a nasty repair bill. On a larger scale, when these products make their way into the public sewer system they collect together and cause clogs in the main collector lines and get tangled in pump stations requiring repair or replacement of equipment.
