…through DRAMA!

3 The Kennedy Center’s Definition of Arts Integration
“Arts integration is an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form. Students engage in a creative process which connects an art form and another subject area and meets evolving objectives in both.”

4 Impetus for Integration:
“The school curriculum provides intentional and meaningful integration of the arts and other content areas with natural cross-curricular connections.” Arts & Humanities Program Review, Standard 1: Curriculum & Instruction, Demonstrator 2: Aligned & Rigorous Curriculum, Descriptor C

5 Strategies for Integration!
A&H “Cheat-sheets” Cross-curricular collaboration on lesson planning and preparation, unit building Co-teaching across departments/content areas

6 And now for a Drama/Writing lesson!

7 Bellwork: Have you ever done any acting in your past? What has been your past experience with acting prior to today’s class? If you were to be engaged in the activity of acting for the first time, would you have any reservations/hesitations/fears about it? Why or why not?

8 IMPROV Short for “improvisation”
An acting exercise where one is given a scenario/situational prompt and must improvise, “think on the spot”, about how to best go about acting it out, without any time to prepare or rehearse EX: TV Show, Whose Line Is It Anyway?

9 “Modified” IMPROV Pick a partner.
Each pair, when it is their turn, will be given a strip of paper with a scenario written on it. DON’T SHOW YOUR PAPER TO ANYONE BUT YOUR PARTNER! LET YOUR AUDIENCE TRY TO GUESS AS TO WHAT YOUR SCENARIO IS! You will have 10 seconds to discuss with your partner out in the hall what you are going to do to act out the scenario you are given.

10 “Modified” IMPROV You are allowed to use 2 chairs as props.
Try to act out your scenario as long as you can! When you are finished, take a bow and we (your audience) will clap for you! If there’s time, CRITIQUE!

11 Ready…Set….GO!!! ACTION!!!!

12 APPLAUSE!!!!

13 HELP! WANTED: MORE interesting and entertaining scenarios!!!
On a sheet of paper, come up with some new scenarios that we can act out later during another future class period. Create, think of, as many as you can!

14 EXIT SLIP: Reflection -How did you feel as you were practicing the skill of acting today? -What was it like to try being someone or something other than yourself? Was it hard or easy and why? What about acting is hard or easy? -Critique your own acting ability. How good of a job did you do of acting in the exercises we did as a class today?

15 THE END
