Mission: AU-51 serves as the central source within the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the development and analysis of safeguards and security (S&S) policies and standards affecting facilities, nuclear materials, personnel, and classified information Key Function: Establishes and supports DOE-wide Policy Panels for safeguards and security topics

S&S Policy Panels Background
On December 3, 2007, the Office of Health, Safety, and Security (HSS) established a new system of S&S policy panels Guidance for the seven new policy panels set forth in a February 15, 2008, memorandum from the DOE, Chief, HSS Officer, Mr. Glenn Podonsky stated the policy panels will: Improve Safeguards and Security policy interfaces; Identify policy issues; Obtain early input on new policy initiatives; Support special issue working groups; and Enhance communication among security policy makers, Headquarters program offices, and field organizations, both Federal and contractor S&S Policy Panels to include the following topics: Protective Force Nuclear Material Control and Accountability Security Awareness Program Planning and Management Physical Security Systems Information Security (to include Operations Security and Classified Matter Protection and Control)

S&S Quality Panel Re-start
AU-51 proposed the re-start of S&S Quality Panel system as a means to ensure maximum Headquarters and Field Element participation in the review and/or development of Departmental S&S policy AU-51 awaiting a favorable response to its request for additional resources to enable the re-start of S&S Quality Panels In April 2018, AU-50 received a recommendation from PNSO to form a S&S Special Interest Group (SIG), as a complement to the Emergency Management Issues (EMI) SIG Proposed S&S SIG would be comprised of the following committees: Program Management Operations Protective Force Physical Protection Information Security Personnel Security Material Control and Accountability Foreign Visits and Assignments S&S Advisory Committee Upon receipt of additional resources, a formal memorandum will be published announcing the formal re-start of the S&S Quality Panels, clarifying the forum’s name, scope, process, roles and responsibilities
