2. Own experience of mechanical weed management
Started with mechanical weed management in Special Crops in 90‘s and early 2000‘s
Tobacco: complete, no herbicide - solution
Sugar Beet: 100% headland, 50% all field
Advantages:
through mineralization very good N-supply
Good water management in the dry zone east of Harz mountains (Ø 470 mm/a)
Disadvantages:
Needs manpower and time (with our machines 2 people)
Losses of crop
Satellite-based guidance and camera-based steering of hoeing machine too expensive or not invented

3. Unsolved Problems of Chemical Weed Management
But also mechanical weed management solutions insufficient
Resistant weeds in (row) crops
Same species in main crop
Restrictions: Temperature, Moisture, Wind speed, Air Humidity, …) not compatible to Mechanical Solutions
Technical Solutions:
Spot Spraying: How much solution to mix? How to mix solid and non-solid chemical agents direct at nozzle?
Camera systems and Processing Power: detection, identification, classification, spraying in < 50 ms?
