Increased invasion does not require direct contact between neutrophils and UMSCC47. A total of 50,000 UMSCC47 cells were plated in the upper chamber and 50,000 (1:1 ratio) or 200,000 (4:1 ratio) neutrophils were added to the bottom chamber as described in Materials and Methods. Where indicated, GM6001 (25 μmol/L) and MMP9 (1 μmol/L) inhibitors were added. No chemoattractant was added to the bottom chamber. The results are calculated on the basis of the area (μm2) occupied by cancer cells that invaded through the Matrigel (seen under the membrane; n = 4, ANOVA P < ; Tukey test *, P < 0.05; **, P < 0.01; ***, P < 0.001).
