1 “The Call - 2” Isaiah 6:5-8 04/25/2010 Dr. Dane Boyles

2 “The Call - 2” Isaiah was called to the prophetic ministry at a time of great political & social deterioration and uncertainty. The Almighty knew Isaiah’s assignment was a very, very difficult.

3 “The Call - 2” The LORD would have compassion on his people and rescue them from both political & spiritual oppression (14:1-2). 1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. (6:1)

4 Isaiah 6:2 2 Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.

5 Isaiah 6:3 3 And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”

6 “The Call - 2” Unless we appreciate God for who He really is, we have a theology that contains reality and not a reality that contains God.

7 “The Call – 2” Our individual realities absorb our view of God for they shrink God, neutralize God, and then we forsake God.

8 “The Call - 2” But Isaiah’s vision of the Almighty is meant to absorb us.

9 5 “Woe to me. ” I cried. “I am ruined
5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.”

10 “The Call - 2” An Encounter with God Creates a Responsible Self-Image.
This vision of God produces a corollary—a vision of self. Self-image is the personal view we have of ourselves.

11 “The Call - 2” This vision of God produces a corollary—a vision of self. Self-image is the personal view we have of ourselves.

12 “The Call - 2” The question is:
How does my self-image show that I am a disciple of Jesus?

13 “The Call - 2” Isaiah’s self-image is so very important as he begins his prophetic ministry. 5 … I am a man. (6:5)

14 “The Call - 2” Man is to find his self-image in his creatureliness.
36 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? (Mark 8:36)

15 “The Call - 2” 5 …“I am ruined! (Gr. niomeyti)
Only when we see ourselves in God’s mirror do we see his perfection and our imperfection!

16 “The Call - 2” The roots our salvation are in our sinfulness.
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. (1 John 1:8)

17 “The Call - 2” Man’s basic nature shows up in two ways:
In his expression.

18 Jude 1:14 14 …“See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones

19 Jude 1:15 15 to judge everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have done in the ungodly way, and of all the harsh words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”

20 “The Call - 2” Man’s basic nature shows up is in his culture.
5… I live among a people of unclean lips, (6:5)

21 1 John 2:16 16 For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world.

22 “The Call - 2” How great must God’s love be?
16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

23 “The Call - 2” Isaiah’s theology was constructed.
Isaiah’s self-image was crystallized. 6 Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. (Isaiah 6:6)

24 Isaiah 6:7 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”

25 “The Call - 2” This is redemption!
Isaiah is also representative of the human race in two specific ways: In potential. In Value.

26 “The Call - 2” 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

27 “The Call - 2” Repentant man is useful to God!
We have great possibilities! 8 …And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” (6:8)
